College Spotlight: Chapman University

Jan 18, 2023

Chapman University cultivates an environment of community, encouragement, and belief in STUDENT success. www.chapman.edu

Let me start by saying that Chapman University is a campus I could see my younger self at – a medium-sized university – just big enough to meet new friends every day – and small enough to grow and thrive among peers. Everything was impressive – I love campuses that still have a guard at the guard shack and can direct you to where you are going – then exiting the parking lots – the stairs are clearly marked with arrows indicating which way to go.

The Admission waiting room was my favorite and this is important – so write this down:

Most colleges have a specific Admission Officer that is assigned to YOUR high school. While in the waiting room – Chapman has a slide show -  “Meet Your Counselor” – which gives the name, photo, and region that person covers.

That is the person you want to get to know and you want that person to know you.

When communicating with the institution - you want to direct it to that person.

I encourage a personal note — handwritten is great — this still goes a long way!

OK – HERE ARE THE THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHAPMAN

FIRST

To go along with the theme that you should get to know your Admission Officer / Counselor – Chapman even provides a service project opportunity for you to do together.

Each Admission Counselor is encouraged to plan a service project in the local area where they will be visiting.

I HIGHLY recommend doing this and taking advantage of this – a GREAT way for your AO to remember your name and you get to be yourself

SECOND:

I love this tradition that the Director of Admission, Marcela Martinez, described to me:

At Freshman Orientation — each student gets a stole – a stole is a thick piece of material that goes around your neck and hangs as decoration on top of your graduation gown.

Each freshman gets one at orientation the idea is that throughout your 4 years – you will have people sign it – your supporters, cheerleaders, believers, mentors, and peers.

What a commitment on the part of this institution to cultivate an environment of encouraging community, encouragement, and belief in YOUR success.

THIRD:

CHAPMAN is competitive to get in,  and yet very accessible

A very special shout out to Marcela Mejia Martinez, Director of Chapman Undergraduate Admissions. YOU are fueling confidence and building the dreams of our youth! Bravo!
